This role is within a large federal health agency, delivering one of a series of national data modernisation initiatives currently underway across the portfolio.
The team provides analytics, dashboard and reporting support that informs policy and program decisions across a significant, nationally significant program and its dataset, as well as emergency preparedness functions.
Their work helps program areas understand coverage, emerging risk, and system performance across a large, interconnected data environment.
The Opportunity
Funding has been secured for two newly created positions, with flexibility in how they build out the team (one could be more senior, one more junior, or one could lean more quantitative, depending on the strengths on offer.)
These roles sit with a data hub that provides insights to a genuinely broad range of requests from deep dives into specific coverage gaps, to checking if external factors are correctly applied statistically to existing models, to building a new dashboard fast when an emerging issue comes up.
Once established the team does have a flexible WFH approach for Canberra based staff.
This opportunity offers
- Multiple long-term contracts (August 2026 – 30th of June 2027 + 12-month extension)
- The chance to work on public-facing dashboards reaching over 3,000 viewers
- Diverse, complex work (including potential for data science & ML) with a direct positive impact to everyday Australians
The Role
As a Data Analyst, you will be responsible for
- Building and maintaining public-facing dashboards used by thousands of stakeholders (Power BI & QLIK)
- Delivering statistical analysis and insights that inform policy and operational decisions
- Integrating and managing complex, linked datasets to strengthen analytical capability
- Managing a government-to-government data feed, including onboarding and troubleshooting for external users
- Responding to stakeholder requests ranging from same-day queries to deeper research
The Ideal Person
You are a data analyst with a background in reporting, analytic and dashboards (data science/ quant. as an option) who is comfortable when priorities shift without notice.
If a major issue emerges, you can drop everything to build a dashboard fast, then reprioritise just as quickly.
You will bring
- Advanced skills in either Power BI and/or QLIK and desirable skills cleaning, wrangling or pulling data using one of SQL, R, Python (The team believes in creating good repositories to leverage code without having to re-invent the wheel)
- The communication skills to answer policy and program questions clearly under genuinely competing priorities
- Desirable (exposure to predictive modelling or quantitative research relevant given the more quant-focused of the two roles)
Australian citizenship and existing baseline clearance are mandatory.
Salary / Rate
- These roles have been released as Data Analyst / Data Scientist
- The APS6 level with some flexibility both up to an EL1 and more junior APS5 equivalent aligning to current market rates
HorizonOne is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workforce and we encourage applications from people of all cultures, capabilities and backgrounds.
