Remote Lead Data Scientist - Fintech

About the Role

Our client, a cutting-edge financial technology company, is seeking an accomplished and visionary Lead Data Scientist to spearhead their advanced analytics initiatives. This is a fully remote, Centurion, Gauteng-based position, offering the opportunity to work from anywhere within South Africa. You will lead a team of talented data scientists, driving innovation in machine learning, predictive modeling, and data-driven product development within the Banking & Finance sector. Key Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of data scientists, fostering a culture of innovation and technical excellence.
• Design, develop, and implement sophisticated machine learning models and algorithms for financial forecasting, risk assessment, fraud detection, and customer segmentation.
• Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to identify data science opportunities and translate business needs into analytical solutions.
• Oversee the entire data science project lifecycle, from problem definition and data exploration to model deployment and performance monitoring.
• Drive research into new data science techniques and technologies relevant to the fintech landscape.
• Ensure the quality, scalability, and robustness of deployed data science solutions.
• Communicate complex findings and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Champion data governance and best practices across the organization.
• Contribute to the strategic direction of data science within the Banking & Finance domain.

Requirements

• Master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, or a related quantitative field.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in data science, with at least 2 years in a leadership or team lead role.
• Proven track record of successfully developing and deploying machine learning models in a production environment, preferably within fintech or Banking & Finance.
• Expertise in programming languages such as Python or R, and proficiency with relevant libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
• Strong experience with big data technologies (e.g., Spark, Hadoop) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Deep understanding of statistical modeling, machine learning algorithms, and experimental design.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for uncovering insights from data.
• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, essential for a remote lead role.
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a fully remote setting.
