This role is instrumental in leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to transform data into actionable insights for the mining industry. You will be responsible for developing and deploying advanced analytical models that address critical challenges in exploration, operational efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of data science principles, experience with large-scale datasets, and a passion for applying cutting-edge AI techniques to complex real-world problems. As a Principal Data Scientist, you will mentor junior team members, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and contribute to the strategic direction of our client's data science initiatives.

This is a fully remote position, offering unparalleled flexibility and the opportunity to work from anywhere. You will be a key contributor to driving innovation and efficiency across the mining sector through data-driven decision-making. We are seeking a self-motivated and results-oriented individual who thrives in a virtual collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of advanced AI/ML models for mining applications (e.g., predictive maintenance, resource estimation, operational optimization, safety anomaly detection).
  • Process, clean, and analyze vast datasets from various sources, including sensors, operational logs, geological surveys, and imagery.
  • Develop and deploy robust data pipelines and MLOps practices for scalable model deployment and monitoring.
  • Collaborate closely with domain experts (geologists, engineers, operators) to understand business needs and translate them into data science solutions.
  • Mentor and guide junior data scientists and analysts, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
  • Evaluate and implement new data science technologies, algorithms, and methodologies.
  • Communicate complex analytical findings and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the intellectual property and thought leadership of the data science team through publications and presentations.
  • Ensure data privacy, security, and ethical considerations are addressed in all data science projects.
  • Stay at the forefront of AI/ML research and advancements relevant to the mining industry.

Requirements

  • Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.
  • 10+ years of experience in data science, with a significant focus on building and deploying AI/ML models in an industrial or scientific context.
  • Expertise in programming languages such as Python or R, and proficiency with relevant libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, Pandas).
  • Strong experience with big data technologies (e.g., Spark, Hadoop) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Demonstrated experience in applying machine learning techniques such as deep learning, reinforcement learning, and time-series analysis.
  • Proven ability to lead complex data science projects from inception to production.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, comfortable presenting to executive leadership.
  • Experience within the mining or natural resources sector is a significant advantage.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote setting.

Benefits

  • This is a fully remote position offering significant flexibility and work-life balance.
  • Our client provides a highly competitive salary and bonus structure, comprehensive health insurance, retirement savings plans, and generous paid time off.
  • Opportunities for continuous learning, professional development, and attending leading AI conferences are provided.
  • You will be part of an innovative and forward-thinking company at the cutting edge of technology in the mining sector.
  • As a Principal Data Scientist, you will have direct impact on shaping the future of data-driven mining operations globally.
  • Join a diverse and inclusive team dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what's possible with data science.
