Senior Backend Application Engineer – Python / AWS / GenAI

Cloudworkz is looking for a Senior Backend Application Engineer to build an application platform on AWS.

This is a hands-on engineering role with ownership across development, integration, deployment and production operations. You will build secure, scalable backend services and work closely with technical leads, ML engineers and application stakeholders.

Location: Germany (Remote). Occasional travel within Europe may be required.

Start: As soon as possible.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design and develop backend services and APIs using Python and FastAPI.
• Integrate APIs supporting AI, ML and GenAI-enabled application workflows.
• Deploy and operate containerised backend services on Amazon ECS / Fargate.
• Implement enterprise authentication and authorisation, including Amazon Cognito, Microsoft Entra ID / OIDC federation and server-side role-based access control (RBAC).
• Secure applications using AWS IAM, KMS and Secrets Manager.
• Containerise applications with Docker and manage images through Amazon ECR.
• Build and maintain infrastructure using Terraform.
• Implement and support CI/CD pipelines, preferably using Azure DevOps.
• Deliver production readiness, scalability, resilience, observability and operational troubleshooting.
• Collaborate with technical leads, ML engineers and other application stakeholders.
• Contribute technical documentation, deployment patterns and operational runbooks.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

• Strong hands-on Python backend development and proven delivery of APIs and services using FastAPI.
• Experience deploying applications to AWS ECS / Fargate and taking them into production-scale AWS environments.
• Strong knowledge of AWS application and infrastructure services, including practical boto3 integrations.
• Practical experience with Docker, Amazon ECR, Terraform and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience implementing application security with IAM, KMS and Secrets Manager.
• Practical implementation of enterprise authentication and authorisation using Cognito, Entra ID, OIDC or comparable federation technologies.
• Understanding and implementation of server-side RBAC.
• Ability to work independently and contribute hands-on from the start.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE

• Experience integrating backend services with AI, ML or GenAI platforms and building enterprise AI-enabled applications.
• React or other frontend development experience.
• CloudWatch and application observability experience.
• Delivery experience in complex enterprise or regulated environments.
• Strong understanding of secure cloud-native application design.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE

Please include concrete examples of backend applications you personally designed and developed: the APIs and services you implemented, AWS services used, deployment and CI/CD approach, authentication and security model, scale and production-readiness considerations, and business or technical outcomes.

Strong Python automation or DevOps experience alone will not be sufficient without demonstrated hands-on backend application development. This role requires direct ownership of working application code through to production.
